Milei vs. Lali Espósito: Escalation of Conflict Over State Arts Funding

Buenos Aires, Dec. 19 (NA) – President Javier Milei escalated his public confrontation with Lali Espósito during an interview on the streaming channel Carajo, where he once again questioned the artist and state funding for culture. According to the Argentine News Agency, during his appearance on the show hosted by 'El Gordo' Dan, Milei referred again to the origin of the conflict: 'When they asked me about this girl, I didn't know her, and it seems that that hit her ego. When you've already hunted the lion, the rats don't distract you.' Although the conflict began after Milei's election victory, when the artist expressed her concern with a viral message: 'How dangerous, how sad,' and since then, Lali has been critical of various government policies, becoming a target on social media, while the President used her as an example of his vision on culture and state funding, even nicknaming her 'Lali Deposit' on other occasions. 'That's when everything escalated,' he stated. He then framed the clash within what he defined as a 'cultural battle' and deepened his stance on the role of the state in art. 'The debate led many to wonder how art is funded,' the president affirmed, and was harsher when analyzing the relationship between artists and public subsidies: 'If to live off art you need the state to subsidize you, you don't live off art, you are a 'munipa' on a large scale.' Additionally, he targeted those, in his view, who use their artistic visibility for partisan purposes and celebrated that, in his opinion, society is incorporating the question of how public spending is funded. The statements circulated quickly on social media, and Lali's response was not long in coming. Without making direct mentions, the singer chose to respond with a post on X: she shared an image of her latest show at Vélez stadium, where she is seen on stage before a crowd, accompanied by a lyric from her song 'Payaso': 'When you've already become a champion, the medals don't matter.'
